ABB ACS800 Test Stand Air Liquid Cooled

ABB ACS800 Air Cooled Test Stand

The ABB ACS800 Inverter is a highly advanced and versatile inverter that is widely used in various industries for motor control applications. With its robust design and reliable performance, it offers precise control over motor speed and torque, resulting in enhanced energy efficiency and optimal operation.

What is an inverter and what industries use it?

Inverters are sometimes referred to as AC Drives, Variable Speed Drive (VSD) or Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) however the correct term is frequency converter. ABB Industrial drives are designed for industrial applications where they can be configured to meet the precise needs of a specific application. The heart of the drive is the DTC, direct torque control that provides high performance and significant benefits such as accurate static and dynamic speed and torque control.

The inverter changes the fixed frequency from the mains to a variable frequency output, in turn this can change the speed of the motor which can lead to a reduced usage in power when driving a pump or a motor for example. A rectifier within drive converts the incoming AC to a DC voltage but when used in a wind turbine application, the rectifier converts the incoming DC to an AC voltage which is then pushed to the grid.

ABB ACS800 Inverters and VSD systems are used in many industries but primarily the following:

Renewable Energy (Wind)

Oil and Gas (Drilling)

Manufacturing

Process Industries

Pulp and Paper

Metals

Mining

Cement

Chemical

Evaluation Process and Repair Procedure

When a unit is shipped in for repair, it is first received in our tracking system and a unique six digit number is created and affixed to the unit, images are taken and the unit is scheduled to be evaluated. Once the evaluation process is completed, the unit is quoted out for repair and awaits approval from the customer.

Once approved, the unit is opened up and completely disassembled to the metal housing, thoroughly inspected and cleaned. All damaged or compromised components are replaced and the unit is rebuilt from ground up.

Once the refurbishment is complete the unit is inspected and visually checked with our 40 point checklist the unit is loaded into our custom ABB ACS800 lineup. The liquid cooling system on the ABB inverter ACS800 is used on the test stand and flow rate is checked compared against golden samples.

During testing for the ABB inverter ACS800 AC drive unit, it is slowly powered up with 1000VDC bus voltage and then parameters set for the model under test. The bus capacitors are formed and the output contactors are engaged and the output current is brought up to 80-90% of full load for a burn in test. After the burn in test all data points are recorded and presented to the customer on a test report.

Finally the inverter is packaged into a moisture-resistant bag with desiccant and then placed in factory standard J-crates with the test report.

When it comes to the repair and test stand checks of a ABB Inverter ACS800 unit, it is important to follow a systematic approach to identify and resolve any issues. Here are some general steps that should be taken during the repair process:

Diagnosis: The first step in repairing the ACS800 Inverter is to diagnose the problem accurately. This involves conducting a thorough inspection of the inverter, and checking for any physical damages, loose connections, or faulty components. Additionally, using diagnostic tools and software provided by ABB can help in identifying any error codes or fault messages.

Component Replacement: If any faulty components are identified during the diagnosis, they need to be replaced. This may include power modules, control boards, capacitors, or any other damaged parts. It is crucial to use genuine ABB replacement parts to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

Testing: After replacing the faulty components, it is essential to conduct thorough testing of the repaired inverter. Our test stand service for the ACS800 Inverter from ABB involves verifying the proper functioning of all control and protection features, checking the voltage and current levels, and ensuring the inverter’s overall performance meets the required specifications.

Calibration: In some cases, the repaired inverter may require calibration to optimize its performance. This may involve adjusting parameters such as voltage, current, speed control, and protection settings. Following ABB’s guidelines and using their provided calibration tools will help ensure accurate calibration.

Preventative Maintenance: Once the repair is complete, it is advisable to perform preventive maintenance on the ACS800 Inverter. This includes regular inspections, cleaning, and monitoring to prevent any potential issues from arising in the future. Following ABB’s recommended maintenance schedule can help extend the lifespan of the inverter and minimize downtime.
